Vermillion is located in the Southeast corner of South Dakota near the intersection of Interstate 29 and South Dakota Highway 50. Home to the University of South Dakota, Vermillion also boasts an excellent school system, two clinics, and a hospital. Various recreation activities abound, including bike paths, four city parks, an 18-hole golf course and much more.

Historic Downtown Vermillion consists of several buildings constructed between 1880 and 1942 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Golf currently maintains 135 acres of park land and rights-of-way, provides recreational facilities and programs available to all residents, and manages the Bluffs Golf Course.

Established in 2002, the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie is a state park in Clay County, just north of Vermillion on South Dakota Highway 50, featuring a prominent hill on the Great Plains. The Plains Indians of the region considered Spirit Mound the home of dangerous spirits (or “devils”). Members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition climbed the hill on August 25th, 1804. Spirit Mound gives a fantastic view of the area from the peak, and is also a popular spot for star gazers, especially on moonless nights.
In 2022, the Vermillion City Council approved funding for the renovation of the Lions Park Campground. The campground is closed during this time and the City asks that the public stay out of the area for safety reasons. Read on...
The landfill and recycling center have moved to their summer schedule. The recycling center and landfill will be open on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of the month April 1 through October 21.
