Personnel & Commission

The City Engineer's Office, in cooperation with the Assistant City Manager and Building Official, are the primary points of contact for planning and zoning. The Planning and Zoning Commission considers all zoning matters and makes recommendations to the City Council for zoning map changes, amendments to the ordinance, and development of the Comprehensive Plan (PDF).

Responsibilities

The department is responsible for the following:

  • Reviews proposed residential and commercial development projects for compliance with the Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations
  • Makes recommendations to the Planning Commission and City Council for land use issues such as rezones, planned developments and conditional use permits in accordance with the adopted Comprehensive Plan
  • Provides information concerning the zoning ordinance and subdivision ordinance to residents and developers
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on requests for deviation from the zoning ordinances (i.e. variances)
  • Enforces the zoning ordinance to ensure compliance
  • Monitor adherence to the long range land use plan
  • Monitors growth trends to provide better planning for the future of the City

Joint Jurisdictional Zoning

The City of Vermillion and Clay County exercise joint jurisdictional zoning within an area outside city limits. The Clay County Zoning Administrator is the primary point of contact zoning matters within this area. View the Joint Jurisdictional Zoning Regulations.
