Snow & Ice Removal

The City of Vermillion maintains approximately 47 miles of streets, not including alleyways. On average the City of Vermillion receives 35 inches of snow per year. Utility and Parks Department crews also assist with snow an ice removal on trails, parks and city buildings.

Snow Plowing Equipment

There are 3 to 4 plow routes maintained with several pieces of heavy equipment, including:

  • 2 Front end loaders
  • 2 Motor grader
  • 2 Single-axle dump trucks with plows
  • Pickups with plows

Street Plowing Priorities

Streets are plowed and de-iced in the following order:

  • Emergency snow routes (collector streets)
  • Residential
  • Steep grades / Hills

Street Plowing Time & Policies

In order to fulfill our responsibilities during a snow event, street crews will usually begin plowing around 3 a.m., depending on snowfall amounts, and timing of the storm. We depend on the public to comply with city policies, such as:

  • Complying with parking regulations and parking off-street if possible
  • Expecting maintenance vehicles to stop and back up frequently
  • Keeping up with weather forecasts and preparing for any adverse weather conditions
  • Knowing and understanding the city of Vermillion snow and ice control procedures
  • Maintaining a safe distance from emergency and maintenance vehicles
  • Removing trash cans and recycling bins from the roadways and keeping them at a safe distance in the proper driveway
  • Not discharging snow onto roadways or sidewalks
  • Remembering to drive safely and be courteous during unfavorable driving conditions
