Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

The City began its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) upgrades in 2018, with plans for completion by 2023. AMI is an integrated system of smart meters, communication networks, and data management systems that enables two-way communication between utilities and customers. This project is the first step in modernizing not only the electric grid but the water metering system as well.  These improvements will open the City of Vermillion up for future upgrades and advancements. This system has multiple benefits to both consumers and utilities alike.

In 2021 the Light and Power Department completed the conversion on all commercial and residential electric meters, two years ahead of schedule.  The Water Department faced multiple challenges first with the global pandemic in 2020, and later with supply chain issues in 2021.  Despite all the challenges, the City is still planning to have the water conversion completed by 2023.
