PUBLIC NOTICE: Sign Regulations

The City of Vermillion would like to remind residents that signage in the City is regulated by city ordinance.

The purpose of sign regulations is to encourage the effective use of signs as a means of communication in the City, as well as to protect the public welfare and enhance the appearance and economic value of the landscape.

Permits are required to install many types of signs. However, some sign types are allowed in residential districts without a permit. These exempt signs are subject to the following restrictions.

1. One exempt sign can be located on a residential property. Examples include realtor signs and contractor signs. City Ordinance 152.04(J)

2. Temporary signs can be displayed for up to 60 days or until one week following the referenced event, whichever comes first. Examples include election signs and yard sale signs. City Ordinance 152.04(J)

3.  Flags are also regulated and permitted as signs, but are limited to flags of the United States, the state, the City, flags of foreign nations having diplomatic relations with the United States and other flags that have been approved by the City Council for display, such as USD flags, Tanager flags and team sports flags. City Ordinance 152.13, Table 2 (b)

Exempt and temporary signs are limited in height to three feet above the ground and can be no more than six square feet in area. Flags are limited to 60 square feet in area and shall not be flown from a pole the top of which is more than 40 feet in height. City Ordinance 152.04(J)

Exempt and temporary signs must be located entirely on private property and not in public right-of-way, which is the area between the sidewalk and curb. City Ordinance 152.04(J)

The City Code Enforcement Department is responsible for enforcing the sign regulations and will begin checking the City for violations on October 5, 2020. Signs in violation on or after October 5, 2020 will be removed according to city ordinance and stored at City Hall. Anyone missing a sign can inquire at City Hall to reclaim them one time only during normal business hours (daily 8a.m. to 5p.m. except weekends and holidays).
