Dear Coyotes:
To ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, and proper maintenance of City streets, parking restrictions are necessary, especially in winter months. The City of Vermillion wishes to inform/remind University of South Dakota students leaving town for winter break about a few Ordinances regarding parking restrictions within City limits.
§ 70.074 TIME LIMITATION; GENERALLY. No person shall permit any vehicle, over which he or she exercises control or over which he or she has the right to exercise control, to stand for more than 24 hours within any platted block along any street or alley, or upon any public place within the city.
§ 70.075 REMOVAL OF VEHICLE IN VIOLATION AUTHORIZED; RECLAIMING BY OWNER. A vehicle parked in violation of any of the provisions of this subchapter may be moved either by the Police or Street Department to such other place as the department may determine. The owner or other person claiming the vehicle shall pay the towing and storage charges before being given possession of the vehicle; provided, the payment of the costs shall not be a bar to the prosecution of the owner or such other person responsible for the violation.
§ 70.094 TOWING OF VIOLATORS. Vehicles in violation of this subchapter may be towed as provided in § 70.075. A storage charge of an amount to be set from time to time by resolution of the Council per day shall be assessed each vehicle until the vehicle is claimed.
§ 70.096 EMERGENCY SNOW ROUTES. It shall be unlawful for any person to stop, stand, park, or leave unattended any motor vehicle upon a designated snow route immediately after 2 inches of snow has accumulated and until the snow has been plowed to the curbline.
The following streets are designated as snow emergency routes and shall be signed accordingly:
(1) High Street from Main Street to Cherry Street;
(2) Main Street, Stanford Street to Washington Street, and Dakota Street to east city limits;
(3) Crawford Road from Burbank Road to East Cherry Street;
(4) Dakota Street from Vermillion River to SD 50 Bypass;
(5) National Street, Center Street to Dakota Street;
(6) Plum Street from Main Street to Highway 50 Bypass;
(7) S. University Street, Main Street to Canby Street; and
(8) Stanford Street from Main Street to Cherry Street.
Long story short... if you will be leaving your vehicle in Vermillion for the duration of winter break, please ensure that it is parked in an off-street location. If off-street parking is not available to you, please make necessary arrangements prior to your departure to avoid accumulating tickets, fines, and impound fees. If you have questions please contact us at 605-677-7050.
Have a safe and happy holiday season; we look forward to your return.
Kindly,
CITY OF VERMILLION
